Startled by his encounter with a leper, Francis of Asisi realized that the fine world of the rich and powerful was nothing but deception. All at once, he saw those who were excluded . They became a Challenge for him. In the light of his faith, he saw himself called to served them: he wished to served them like Jesus and with Jesus; he wished to take them from the margins to the centere. He worked to establish a place where the marginalized could live in the world.
 In the course of that work in the spirit of Jesus, he became a theologian: from the psalms of the poor of Israel he learned to see God anew as the God of those who labour and are burdened and and Jesus Christ as the One working for the rights of the poor.
